We started the ’silly season’ that is the local VW show season, short as it is, with ‘The VeeDubs at the Drive-In’ event kicking it all off…. Then a couple of weeks later we had ‘The Great Collective Breaky’ at XWray Cafe in Freo…. And finished it all a week later with ‘The Day of the Volkswagen’ at MacKallum Park…. And what a thoroughly enjoyable experience it was!
First up…. ‘The VeeDubs at the Drive-In’ event, which from all reports, was a cracking success!…
Hosted by the South West NoH2O contingent, and jointly supported by the NoH2O Collective and the VW Club of WA, this event was a big two day affair, with a couple of cruises, and an eve at the Drive-in and and evening camp out at the local Caravan Park… Still bummed that I couldn’t make this one, but do my best to be there next year for sure! There is loads more pics from this amazing event on the forum…. Check it out!
Then we had ‘The Great Collective Breaky’….
What a great event…. From the feedback I got on the day, and on the forum thread, this event was very well received…
As an experiment, I feel it went very well… Greg and gang at XWray loved having us there, with Dubs filling the carpark up and putting on a very informal show for the cafe regulars… I reckon we will make this a regular pre-DoVW event in the future!
Then we had ‘Choppas Drag Day’ which didn’t happen on account of bad weather… But fear not!…. We are planning to hit the track this Wednesday night with avengeance…. So be there!
The next event for us was the NoH2O Cruise to the DoVW 2012…
As is tradition, dubbers from all corners of the state have hosted short cruise events to the ‘Heart of the Park’ shopping centre carpark… We had 14 Dubs leave mine and converged on Vic Park where at least another 15 Dubs waited for us…. So cruising to the show and entering the park area caused a bit of a stir… The VW Club officials handled the influx of Collective members with great skill and efficiency… Well done guys!
And this is what greeted us at the show!
What a great day out…. Hard to cover it all, but the thread tells a pretty good tale, and there are loads of pics for you to peruse… That’s it… That’s all I got…. You wanna know more, your gonna have to have a look at all these stories and many more on the forum!
So sorry folks…. These past months have totally gotten away from me…. In all the stress of my daily life…. That of an upper school high school teacher, have just not gotten around to updating this here blog!…. I can’t believe that I have missed two months worth of updates!!!!????
Ben and Morg’s in the staging lanes… They also crew for Rod Penrose when not steering their own cars!
Anyway…. Some of you guys may know that I went to Warwick this year…. Most of you prolly don’t know how this visit came about, but it’s a pretty cool story, and one worth mentioning again…. Earlier in the year, Reuben and I went to the VWMA event held at the WSID…. There I got to catch up with old friends, crew for Morgan Smith and Ben Robinson, and generally have a great old time…. Whilst there, Wayne Penrose asked me if I was planning on going to Warwick later in the year…. I hadn’t, but he said to me straight up…. If I did go, he’d give me one of his cars to race if I was interested…. As you can see…. I did go, and I had a blast!…. If you haven’t had the chance, swing by the thread and have a gander at the many pics from the events…. Some I took, some where taken by Morgs and his lovely wife Aliseia…
In other news…. The collective’s good friend, Rod Penrose got to take his new car out to WSID for some some shakedown runs in the low 9’s at 140mph!…. Obviously, this pic is from one of the exhibition runs at Warwick, but for those that might be interested in reading a little more, check out the thread on AVD…. This car has low 6 second potential by the way!!!
And as we all know, the local show season is about to commence…. NoH20 are hosting two very special pre-DoVW events this year…. First we have “The Great Collective Breaky” at XWray Cafe in Freo on the 25th of this month…. The we have the third installment of “Choppa’s Drag Day” at the Motorplex on the following Wednesday eve…. For more info, go and check out the respective threads….
In closing…. Spriggo sent me a pic of the VeeDubs at the Drive-in weekender… Sad to miss out on this one, but things happen…. Look forward to seeing the pics of the entire weekends festivities.
Yes folks….. I’m not kidding you!… This past month has seen some massive events taking place, many new members signing up, car shows with huge VW attendance, milestones being achieved, licensing guidelines being tested and a number of other cool things that I won’t go into here…. You’ll just have to get stuck into the forum for more details!
Big news for us all is the fact that Bernie managed to get ‘Norm’ licensed and on the road…. Not a big deal I hear you say…. Oh but it is grasshopper… It is…. You see…. ‘Norm’ is a very special SC for the WA VW scene….. He is, in fact, the first legally modified VW Bus in WA…. Now I’m not talking about flash wheels and horsepower increase…. I’m talking major wheel mods (different sizes rims and tyres front and rear), suspension and brake upgrades that, till now, have been impossible to do…. I know what you saying now….. “but what about Choppa’s BD or Antony’s Army Bus”…. Well yes…. Both of those Bus’ have been modified and registered, but neither of them have been engineer certified….. They have gotten through rego because their respective mods are on the mild side when compared to narrowed suspension and 4WDisc Brakes!….. Unfortunately Bernie has not kept the build thread going on these upgrades, so your gonna have to take my word for it… It’s a very big thing to have managed that.
Another new car on the scene is Dave’s Hotrod inspired late bug…. Dave has done a brilliant job on this car…. Converting a late Bug to look earlier than it is, installing kustom lights, body trims and interior all in his home workshop…. Event the body and paint has been masterfully applied by his hand…. It’s a stunning car to be sure!
The ‘collective’ put on a massive display of 11 cars (plus one secret SC on the Brett and Lee’s Handmade Vintage Kustom bikes stand)…. For more info and pics, be sure to check out the events section of the forum….
That’s right folks…. This is the 50th post on the NoH2O Blog…. So to celebrate, I have decided to have beer…..
Aaahhhhhh…. That was nice.
So what else is new I hear you ask?….I’ve had some visitors at my place this past week…. Morgan and his partner Alicia… For those of you dubbers into fast street cars and the Sydney dub scene, may have seen Morg’s awesome bug (12.5 NA and 11.7 with a 50 shot of NOS) in the race features in VWMA… His car is quite an amazing bit of kit, and I was very fortunate to be asked to pit for him and Ben (owner of the VWMA sponsored Drag Bug) at the Western Sydney VW Drag Day earlier this year…. I’ll be there again next year for sure!
Talking about VWMA…. Casey’s Black Ghia made this months cover….. WA Dubber represent!
Next up I have to let you guys know about the projects that are going on…. Obviously I’ve been busy…. The POS is making really nice power now and is ready for the up coming hotrod show (see below), but the stroker is still due to get together before the drag season starts…. Really need to pull my finger out on that one…. The Bus is really going quite nicely, but I reckon the 1776 that’s currently in the POS might find a new home there soon….
And the Ghia has finally found the centre of the shed…. Engine and transaxle is out, with cleaning, detailing and replacement of stuff about to happen there….. Then we have what all you guys are up to…. Brom’s is making great progress on getting his fancy Red9 IFS under the front of his PV…. Bernie has made great progress with Norm…. Brock has got the Supercharger working really well with his VRod….. Vic has his new engine ready for install, and Andy is building up a strong new stroker for his daily…. It’s all going on in the shed…. Check out the projects and daily drivers threads for more details….
And finally….. Next month the Collective is putting on a massive display at this years Hot Rod and Streetcar Spectacular…. How’s 11 VW’s sound?…. Crazy stuff…. I’d like to say thanks to everyone who accepted my invitation to join us there this year…. The quality of the Dubs we will have on display this year are amazing…. All cars have that special something, that style and finish that is perfect for a Hot Rod/Kustom style event such as this…. No ricer inspired cars get a look in here….. It’s all about traditional aesthetics and details, interesting and intriguing ideas and purity of form…. Look forward to seeing you guys there.
The Bus has finally hit the street again, and it’s a bloody good thing too…. Not having a dub on the road since Christmas has not done my cred much good at all!… But it has all been very worthwhile…. The fresh lil’ 1641 is running like a trooper with the old German ’steel can’ 009 and DCNF 40mm Weber to drive it all…. That POS chinese sidewinder knockoff needed some work to make it fit properly, but jeez it sounds nice!…. And the new suspension all round is bedding in nicely too… The 80mm narrowed LP beam conversion with dropspindles up front and some of 2Tone’s adjustable dogleg springplates on the rear are really working out nicely…. Those short GR2’s on the front might be a bit too stiff though…. Working through all the little things at the moment, just to make the Bus that much nicer to live with is the current task…. Have moved the T34 into the middle of the shed now…. Hope to have that beast back on the road by summer!
Other news to hand is that new member Jonathan has scored a very tidy, but not running early car to play with…. Things are moving quicly in his shed, as he has purchased Vic’s old 1200 6volter and got that in there… Plans are afoot for a fresh beam and an altitude adjustment in the very near future…. Andy (66BRM to you lot) has stepped up and begun a new engine build for his old faithful daily driver…. This new engine should see a nice increase in power and torque over the current twin Weber fed 1641, but I still reckon he needs to take 60mm out of that front beam!…. DAK-DAK-68 has also picked up yet another sweet little runner…. not sure of his plans, but I’m sure we shall all find out soon enough…. Maharg sold his Oval and the very lucky new owner is a new member of the collective…. Way to keep it in the family!…
Next up we have Brad…. He has been making very good progress with his 63 project…. The job he has done on that floorpan is mind blowing!…. Bernie has been working very hard on Norm of late…. Jason’s car is getting a fresh interior put in as I type this…. The seats in my T34 are being re-trimmed, Deadkombi sold his awesome Black Oval, Hoody has just about got his PV ready for rego and the Whale ready for some lucky new owner, and finally Bigfella has got started on his Splitty…..
Next order of business is Alfred’s this coming Wednesday night and the Great South West Meet down in Bunno next weekend… So it’s all action stations around here!
That’s right folks…. I’m nearly out of time this month… Only just made it!!! My time management skills really need some work, but anyway… What’s been happening?… Plenty of new members, some new events in the south west (as reported last month), some cool stuff happening in the sheds around abouts and even a few sheds getting put up…. Good times all round.
You guys have to be pretty stoked with your progress… Jay has been making very good progress with his Splitty… That shifter and those door cards are the shiz….. Moz’s PV Dbl Dr is getting the rust removed down the Munster Garage…. And I have finally got around to dropping my Low-Light.
Doc scored the Tub recently and has been getting busy with some much needed upgrades to the suspension…. I’m sure there’s other changes in mind for the future…. Doc can’t leave well enough alone!
And finally…. I dunno if you guys know this, but one of us here at ‘the collective’ has entered into a new venture…. Hand Made Vintage Kustoms is the name of the enterprise and they (Brett and his business partner Lee) specialize in kustom built motorcycles…. They don’t have a website yet, but they do have a FB presence….. Checkit.
The day is about to dawn, and this version (2.o) of ‘the collective’ is about to enter it’s fourth year…. That’s right folks, NoH2O as it currently stands is 4 years young!…. Now those of you that were here for the first edition of ‘the collective’, may well remember the mandate of NoH2O…. That is to provide an outlet for the VW community like no other, a ‘collective’ that offered the fringe of the local VW world, a different voice, a more relevant view and one not stuck in the quagmire of the establishment…. At the time (over 12 years go!), the local VW scene was a little short on enthusiasm for the new wave… The people at the top tried really hard to make it an enjoyable experience, but we the new breed, wanted to do other things…. The ideas were aging and not seen as relevant to us younger (?) upstarts, so a few of us got together one day to talk it over…. And so the NoH2O collective was born….
Since those halcyon days, ‘the collective’ has grown in number to include members from not only the local community, and the VW Club too, but nationally and internationally, dubbers found themselves hooking up with ‘the collective’…. Expats, friends and the VW community heros all spend time here at NoH2O…. I think it’s an amazing thing, that something so personal to us all, has grown to include a huge range of like minded VW people from around the globe…. This goes a long way to confirm our ideas from all those years ago…. Ideas that at the time, many thought were elitist and confrontational… But this story has been told before, and I might tell it again one day, but for now we look to the future…. ‘The collective’ is by no means the ‘be all and end all’ of VW life, but I like to think that is has made an impact on the local VW community…. And truly in a positive way….. The old guard have acknowledged us as equals, have shaken our ‘collective’ hands and continues to invite and include ‘the collective’ in every event they host.
Speaking of NoH2O events….. Earlier this month Kim (Way2cool) and his amazing family hosted NoH2O regulars at the most excellent Fairbridge Festival…. An event that has become somewhat of tradition for ‘the collective’…. Yet again a brilliant time was had…. Highlight acts for me would have to be The Fancy Brothers, Dave Mann Trio, The Chipolatas and The Joe Black Trio…. Look’em up!!!…. Other very cool moments that come to mind was being invited to chat the with James Lush, host of the Saturday morning radio show on ABC 720…. What a crack that was!…. For more cool pics and feedback from the event, be sure to check out the Fairbridge thread.
Other cool stuff going down is the recent ‘growing’ of the collective in the form of members in the South West of WA hosting their first day out…. For those of you have never been to the South West of WA, I can honestly say you are missing out… Something you really need to put an end too…. Spriggo got this little shindig happening in very short order and by all accounts it was an awesome day out…. Many of us ‘city folk’ are planning to make the trip down there for the next one…. Here’s hoping the planets align for us.
Finally I’ll close with yet another milestone for you all…. The collective is about hit 400 members!…. Mind blowing stuff…. Can’t quite comprehend that one…. Unfortunately there are many members that don’t spend a heap of time here…. They don’t know what they are missing really….. Here’s hoping that some of our less frequent visitors come back soon and say high…. The regulars around here are all pretty cool peeps, with some equally awesome stories to tell…. If your a lurker, don’t be shy… The ‘collective’ doesn’t bite!
That’s right folks…..Though the collective has been going for over a decade now, the 4th birthday of this forum is almost upon us… Hard to imagine I know, but it’s all totally true…. I remember the day the ‘collective’ was first formed all those years ago… We gathered at Paul and Sandy’s place in Vic Park, the street was ‘littered’ with numerous VW’s of all shapes and sizes…. Some ratty, some neat, nearly all were true daily drivers…. Back then, few of us had more than one VW…. I myself had the Green Meanie, now owned by Graham Sweatman, and my old and very slammed Low-light was my daily drive/work bus…. Paul had ‘Love Handles’… That was the name of his bus…. Honestly… A very cool splitty that is now owned by Crossy…. Wayne was there…. In his Falcon of course…. My brother in his Notch…. Jamie S and his way cool splitty Micro…. And a dozen other ‘lifers’ that are not really hanging around as much anymore, though I do see them from time to time….
Some of the latest happenings have been a blast…. Not VW specific, but VW inclusive…. Gotta love that…. And the dress code was something else!!!!… Our man Von Kustard was on hand to lay down some lines…
Other stuff is afoot… Steff had his second coming of his swap-meet… Didn’t sell much, but the chat and laughs made the day a blast….. Haz and Mikey turned up in their stupidly low VW’s…
And Vic in his badass OG paint/interior/engine/trans and 6volt Bug….
And here’s the closing shot…. I’ll leave the final quote to your imagination…. Enjoy!
Have you ever tried to explain the concept of a leap year to a 10 year old?…. My god my head hurts…. But anyway…. Here we are, the month of February is about to come to a close ‘prematurely’ and it seems like little has happened in the past month…. The truth be told, I’m not really sure what has transpired…. I know that the Bus project is no closer to completion, the short block for the engine is together, but the top end still has much to be done…. The POS is getting a new fuel tank fitted along with a new crank case breather setup…. And the slicks have arrived….. :0) But the car still needs some dyno time before I hit the track once more…. I have finally found a dyno shop willing to take on such an unusual setup, but hopefully next week the car will finally get some dyno love.
Next up I’d like to let you all know that the Free’n'Easy might be making it’s return this year…. Back in the Freo location, and hopefully with the same format as in previous events, but this time I’ planning to build the drag event up a little on the Wednesday night before the show…. As in previous drag nights, we will have our own “VW Only” at the Motorplex which is open to any and all VW’s…. Whether they be making the car show or not, all are welcome to race…. Stockers, modified streeters, daily drivers, vintage classics, or full on drga cars…. All are welcome…. There is also some naming right’s in negotiations for the drag night… And it’s very possible we might have a contingent of east coast drag cars coming over for a blast too! But more on that later….
Just yesterday I got back from the VWMA Drag Day and WSID in Sydney…. I’ll leave you guys with a selection of pics from Saturday’s event, but make sure you check out the pic thread… I’ll be posting some more images over the next few days…..
Cheer’s to Craig Hughes for hosting the event, Morg’s and Ben for allowing me the honour of hangin’ out with them all weekend. Reub, Craig, Brian, Dean (from Dino’s Pizza), Dave, Rodney, Crazy Col, Matt, Daimo, the Pells, Chris, Henry, Rose, Ian, Aaron, Greg, Wayne and all the other dudes that I had the pleasure of spending time with over the course of the event…. All I can say is…. Cheers for a fantastic weekend, and I will most definitely see you guys at the next one.
Man my life is passing me by…. Here I sit, pouring over this months blog entry, wondering where the past 6 weeks have gone?… It seems like only yesterday that the school year had come to a close, the silly season was about to kickoff, and I had big plans for all the projects I was going to finish off this holidays…. So here it is, I’m back at school tomorrow, the kids are back on Thursday, and I have only managed to ‘complete‘ two of the four projects I had hoped to hit…. Not all bad I guess… The car trailer is finally rego’d, and has proved it’s worth many times in these past weeks…. I also got the POS going pretty well….
Took the car to the drags (on my fancy trailer!), ran some good TnT times and learned heaps from the trip…. Still more mods to complete, but I know I’m heading in the right direction…. For more info on how the car ran and some cool pics from the evening out, be sure to check the thread in the projects section…
Off to Sydney later next month… The VW Drags run by Craig Hughes at VWMA is coming up…. I’m not racing, but will be flying over for the weekend…. Be good to catch up with a few old mates, and finally meet up with some of those kookie online acquaintances..
There’s a few cool projects on the go at the moment…. Sure it’s been pretty quiet on the project front, on account of the festive season and the heat, but some peeps have been getting it done…. Tony being one of them… Check out his progress on his Bay.
