Some of you lot know I like to do silly things to my cars.... Keep it clean ok! I'm talking about hotrodding them....
So here it is... A while back a mate of mine (Hoodwink) bought a bug... It didn't look to bad, but it didn't look to good either....
Once Hoodie got the old girl home, his evil plot started to form.... Narrowed beam, slammed to hell, my old rims and little tickle with the paint stick and shazam!
Then Hoodie started to get ideas about another car, and somehow he talked me into buying it... So a deal was struck, some parts changed hands and i got me another project to finish....
so after a bit of work finishing off some things, making other things work, tuning the car, fitting some parts back on, tightening up other bits and generally making it a driver once more, I had myself a new driveway ornament...
Then the fun really started.... Stay tuned! |

So.... Here it is... i have this seriously low dub, she's running better and riding ok, so I took the old girl for a wee spin around Freo....
Taking my usual scenic drive into Freo, following the Swan River on the most beautiful of mornings, dodging the odd pot hole and crap road repair along the way... First major obstacle was a pair of the largest and longest speed bumps you have ever seen!.... I knew this would come, but I had to test the limits didn't I? ... So I pull over and assess the speed arresters before me... There's nothing for it... I have to give it a shot, whats the worst that could happen?.... Get stuck, high and dry?.... "How embarrassment", to quote Effi... So what happened I hear you ask?... I dragged the pan right under the seat.... Must make a note of that... Stock up on pan replacement panels....
That over with, I continue on down the crappiest back streets in Oz, dodging yet more potholes and ripples (and this stretch of hotmix has only just been laid I might add!! Shocked ), slowly winding my way in to the world famous Freo café strip, where I know that most of the early morning punters are scoping out the passersby... Normally this would not be a problem, but seeing as how a good many of the locals know me, I must make a good showing.... So I head for my favourite parking stand in an attempt to stop and pick up my morning java hit and wodauknow?... She drags her belly like a bitch when the sales are finished!... I ground out the beam, the adjuster and the pan, wrenching out junks of concrete and paver's as I slid on in to the spot.... All with the applause of the establishment....
Very stylish!
So was it all worth it?
Damn right it was.... I'm back down this arvo for my late arvo coffeé! |

Some of you know this story so bare with me....
A while back the nostalgia drags were beckoning and some bright spark suggested I get the POS down to the event and have a blast... So I get to thinking.... I have all this performance stuff sitting around and a torquey little engine in my car that is of an unknown quantity.... So what to do?
First thing to do obvious.... Talk to some of my motorhead mates and let them talk me into it.... Second step is pretty straight forward too... Logic is thrown out the window.... Lets do this shall we?
Options.... What are the options?
Option #1:
1835cc engine thats in the car. Built by someone other than me, and is of an unknown quantity. It goes like the clappers, but hits a power brick wall at around 5000rpm (stock crank, mild cam). It also has a DCNF weber, 050 Dizzy and an AS21 crankcase.
Option #2:
1776cc engine that I built back in the early 90's. This engine made good power in its day. Best quartermile time was 14.8... But it needs some love. It needs a new set of rings and the heads rebuilt... And the Dell's need to be rebuilt. Fortunately I have all the parts instock to do these upgrades.... This lot will set me back about 400 bux.
Option #3: Take the 1835 and turbo charge it with some old school/grassroots tec... I have a couple of suitable used turbos to choose from, I have an old Brazilian 09 Dizzy I can lock, and I have most of the oil fittings, turbo plumbing, materials and other crap to make it work...
Option #4: turbo charge the 1776...
Plus there is a few other things that need to be looked at...
I need to fabricate an intermediate trans mount and fit one of my rear traction bars along with fitting new banana mounts to the bellhousing. The engine leaks a little oil, the clutch, throw out bearing and all the cooling tin needs to be replaced.
I picked option 3.... First job was to pick the turbo for the project. I have a TD04 for my EJ25T Powered notchback project and I had a good IHI RBH5 that I picked up a few years back.... I looked at both and decided on the IHI.... Both turbos are off 2ltr engines, but the TD04 is off an Sti so the exhaust housing would be a little too much for the 1835. The IHI was off an EVO Lancer (or somink) and looked to be a little ezr to mod for the purpose. So it got the nod...
So out comes the 1835.... |

Yep... but I haven't had the time to update the thread...
Got the heads back from reco.... 700 bux later!!! Still waiting on some bits from the US to put it back together... Got some cleaning to do yet...
Front end is in...
Got the spindles and tie rods on tonight.... Drums and rims go back on Wednesday night and the car get back on the ground... Then do the wheel alignment... Started on the rebuild of the Dellorto's (not gonna have the turbo running for the drags unfortunately.. ).
Still need to finish off the fuel system and the trans mounts, then the engine goes back in.... Hoping to get the engine back together this weekend provided the bits get here in time... Still need to sort exhaust too... Might just jimmy the 3" muffler for the turbo as a temporary measure... |

Parts finally got here yesterday... Gotta finish the engine cleanup... I'll start on the engine assembly in the next few days... The frontend is done and back on the ground... And its real close!!! Might have to adjust that a little!!!!.... Started on the fuel system today too... Gotta rip out the turbo system and fit the NA system in... Still need to find a suitable fuel pump... Can't find my NA one... The carbs are stripped and cleaning has begun... Hope to have those upgraded and back together in the next day or so... Got the fan shroud finished, just needs some paint... Still need to find some good twin port cylinder shrouds, then the paint will go on...
Pics to come... |

Sweet, glad to hear its coming together! Looking forward to checking her out and to see how she goes.
hopefulley you can get the turbo done for the new year and get it down to the drags again. Will be intersting to see the comparison! |
