Please excuse the commentary of this post gang…. I have plagiarised a little here and there, ‘borrowing’ comments from a few of the conversations that have taken place on other forums. So I ask you to bare with me here… Your views are greatly encouraged.

A few weeks back, members from various VW enthusiast groups (under invitation) converged on a recent committee meeting held by the VW Club of WA. There was a good representation from the major forum based groups and the tone of the meeting was very positive. The VW Club committee are obviously ‘feeling’ our collective effects are looking for ways to improve their current situation.

The main points expressed at the meeting where:

You don't get much for your membership fee
They don't communicate well
Their website is not effective or attractive
Not enough events of interest are organised
There are many "Splinter groups" that need someone like the club to bring us all together
There PL insurance is useful and we all want to use it
The mag doesn't need to be monthly OR printed (PDF instead)
The committee doesn't promote the club, it's benefits or its events effectively

As you can see it was not all positive but they recognise that membership is down and could be better.

They want us to seek others opinions and get back to them….

As some of you know, the events that NoH2O put on in the early days were very successful, but then the world became gripped in the fear of bombings and war and the next thing you know, insurance premiums went through the roof, clubs closed up shop because the laws changed everything and everyone needed to have coverage… So our events stopped…. The committee suggested that if other VW groups wanted to run their own events legally, there could be a possibility to somehow integrate the VW Club brand and our own in some way. In doing this, our events will be covered by the VW Club insurance coverage. The catch is that we would have to come to some formal agreement with them, which would include some form of membership to the VW Club. There has been some suggestion that not everyone would want to pay the fees that the Club is asking (the amount is currently being reviewed). So it was tabled that there could be various forms of membership which would attract varying levels cover….

It was also suggested that the VW Club look at reinstating a CAMS register (http://www.cams.com.au/) and offer this as part of the membership. There are a number of members in the other groups that are into driving events and motorsport. Granted, not everyone is into motorsports like autokhanas, sprints or drag racing, but I bet a lot of members would dig navigational rally and ‘poker runs’! To run these sorts of events, the club will need CAMS membership. Any members will still be able to ‘compete’ in these events, but they will have to pay an entry fee to do so.

The committee also said the membership would effectively get you into their regular events for free (non members would have to contribute i.e. entrance fee - I understand this and I think we should be open to ideas here. I for one think it’s a good idea, but first we need to see what ideas can be generated as a consequence of this proposal. Everyone is asked get involved here, in order to make joining the VW Club of WA attractive we need to find out how exactly this is to work, what are the obligations of NoH2O in regards to this membership deal, and who will be the ‘voice’ of the NoH2O within the VW Club of WA structure.

This proposal has been talked about on other forums as far as I’m aware, as to how these conversations have panned out I do not know, but I’d really like some feedback from you all….

Simon
