Got started on the oval and there has been no nasty surprises. Body is in exc condition, lots of cleaning of parts. Got a little 1641 started for it. Engle 110, ported heads, twin kadrons. Got a 67 12 volt short axle box cleaned up ready to go and lots of late nights already.
This is how I found it. I had already put the wheels and guards back on. UTEBOY lent me some 14x6 kombi wheels to tow it home with. The offset meant they hit the spring plates. Did the lug nuts up about 1 thread and hoped for the best. I wasn't going anywhere without it!
Did a bit of cut and polishing. Sides are beautiful and straight.
Took all the inner guards back to bare metal, red oxide and gloss black. The front quarter is the original paint.

I agree, if you got OG paint, make the most of it and save it. |

Have been burning the midnight oil over the past few weeks and it starting to come together. My idea at the moment is to leave the outside and clean up the rest. The underside of everything has been taken back to metal, then red oxided and painted gloss black. The whole bottom pan, inside and out, above the gearbox, the front end, under the bonnet has all be fininshed. Who ever owned the car originally had painted over everything in red oxide and sound deadner.
I rebuilt the front end with king and link pins replaced, new bushes etc, replaced the brakes, new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes and drums machined, new flexi lines, fitted 67 12volt beetle gearbox, with split nose cone and hockey stick, and rebuilt a 1641 for it.
Still plenty to do, but it's coming together. Chris lent me his red rims to give it the hot rod look.

The heads are a smaller version of what I had in the last bug. Spoke to Ron Harris and he said it's all in the heads, so what the hell!
Was planning on getting it lisenced next week, but the little things are slowing me down. I will give it shot though.... |
